Alexander

By Robert Mays

A huge performance against Nevada helped Danario Alexander become the second Missouri Tiger this season to be named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.

Alexander hauled in nine receptions for 170 yards and two touchdowns in Missouri’s 31-21 victory last Friday that moved the Tigers to 4-0 on the season.

Alexander’s 170 yards made for the 11th-best total in Missouri history and was his second straight game with multiple touchdowns.

He currently ranks fifth in the Big 12 with 101 receiving yards per game, and his two touchdowns against Nevada helped move him into a tie for eight place on MU’s all-time touchdown receptions list.

Non-conference success

September 28, 2009

By beating Nevada Friday, Missouri finished 4-0 for its 2009 non-conference schedule. The last time Missouri lost a game to a non-conference opponent was the 2006 Sun Bowl, a 39-38 loss to Oregon State. The last time Missouri lost a regular season game to a non-conference opponent was Sept. 10, 2005, a 45-35 loss to New Mexico.

Some Nevada love for a former Tiger

September 25, 2009

Ziggy Hood

Sam and I explored the UNR campus a little this afternoon, and ran into a Nevada student wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers #96 jersey with HOOD printed above. That’s the jersey worn by Ziggy Hood, a former defensive lineman for MU, who’s now in the NFL.

The student said he had to get to class, holding in his hand a paper to turn in, but stopped to chat for a bit. He said he’s a Pittsburgh fan and got the jersey because Hood was the first pick the defending champion Steelers made in this year’s draft.

Interesting, though, that he chose the day of the Missouri – Nevada game to wear the jersey.

Martin Rucker goes to Philly

September 24, 2009

By Craig Thomas

Former MU tight end Martin Rucker, who was waived by the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday, has joined the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad.

Rucker caught two passes last year for the Browns as a rookie. The Eagles cut a tight end from their practice squad earlier in the week, making room for Rucker. Former Tiger wide receiver Jeremy Maclin is in his rookie season with the Eagles as well.

Tight ends on the Eagles’ roster include starter Brent Celek, rookie Cornelius Ingram, and Alex Smith.

Getting settled in Reno

September 23, 2009

By Craig Thomas

The Biggest Little City

Well, after a long trip that started at 1 a.m. today, Sam Wilson and I have arrived in Reno, Nevada and spent most of the day here. We’re planning on spending most of Friday on campus leading up to the Mizzou-Nevada game, so we’ll have pictures and notes from that on the blog to go with the weekly stories for ColumbiaMissourian.com.

Meanwhile, we did a little exploring of Downtown Reno. It’s not particularly glamorous, but the scenery during the daytime is impressive. We’ll get some pictures of that too. The Sierra Nevada Mountains are not far away. Until then, this photo above will have to do.
