Furman in big games

Last week, we examined Bowling Green’s experience in big games against high level competition and found the Falcons had modest success against those programs. Indeed, Bowling Green led Missouri 20-6 in the third quarter before falling 27-20.

This week, we look at the Furman Paladins. Furman, as Sam pointed out here and here, is a member of the FCS (the old Div. I-AA), so their level of competition is generally much lower than what Missouri sees in the Big 12 or Bowling Green faces in the Mid-American Conference.

Let’s look at Furman’s recent trips to major college programs:

2008 – at Virginia Tech (lost 24-7)

2007 – at Clemson (lost 38-10)

2006 – at North Carolina (lost 45-42)

Furman clearly does not have as much recent experience in big games as Bowling Green did. Of course, Furman giving the Tigers a scare would be a MUCH bigger surprise than Bowling Green doing it. But Coach Gary Pinkel has said he wants better execution this week in any case.
