This week’s game historic in Delaware

Saturday brings the end of a long controversy in the state of Delaware.  The Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens will host the Delaware State Hornets, the first regular season meeting between the two schools. The schools are located only about an hour’s drive apart. Delaware State is a historically black institution, leading some to say Delaware wouldn’t schedule Delaware State for reasons related to race.  Others pointed to Delaware’s scheduling Delaware State in other sports as evidence it was nothing against the school, just a lack of space in a crowded non-conference football schedule.

Almost 1,000 miles away, the Furman-Missouri game will have its own place in the controversy. Furman was Delaware’s originally-scheduled opponent for this weekend. When Furman backed out of the game to play Missouri, that opened this weekend for Delaware to schedule the historic game.
