Mizzou still winless in Big 12

October 25, 2009

By Craig Thomas

With last night’s loss to Texas, the Missouri Tigers fell to 4-3 overall, and 0-3 against Big 12 competition.

It’s not the first time this has happened under Gary Pinkel, but it’s been a while. The 2002 team, Pinkel’s second, lost the first three weeks of October. The losses came to Oklahoma, Nebraska and Texas Tech. The Tigers managed only two conference wins that year, against Kansas and Texas A&M.

Under Pinkel, Missouri has lost three straight conference games two other times.

– In 2004, the very disappointing Tigers lost five straight to Texas, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Kansas State and Kansas.

– In 2006, Missouri lost to Oklahoma, Nebraska and Iowa State in consecutive weeks, but still went to the Sun Bowl.

Despite three straight conference losses after this 2006 game against Kansas State, Martin Rucker and Mizzou went to the Sun Bowl.

On the bright side, it would seem Missouri has now played its three toughest opponents of the year. Though Colorado has improved enough to beat Kansas last week, the Tigers have outscored them 113-10 over the last two seasons. Mizzou likely won’t face a ranked opponent until possibly against KU over Thanksgiving weekend.
