Brad Smith helps send Colts to first loss; good day for former Tigers

December 27, 2009

By Craig Thomas

The New York Jets are still alive in the NFL playoff hunt. In part, they can thank the previously unbeaten Colts (14-1), who took starters like Peyton Manning out of the game for good. In part, they can thank a former Missouri Tiger.

Brad Smith holds the record for the longest play in Jets history after his 106-yard kickoff return Sunday in Indianapolis. The Jets (8-7) knocked off the Colts 29-15. Smith’s third-quarter dash gave New York a 10-9 lead.

He also carried twice for 16 yards.

Jeremy Maclin stepped up today, too. The rookie Philadelphia Eagle and former MUwide receiver managed to keep his toes inbounds as he hauled in a Donovan McNabb pass inside the 10-yard line in the final minute against Denver. That allowed David Akers to drill a game-winning field goal with just seconds left. The Eagles (11-4) beat the Broncos 30-27.

In all, Maclin had six catches for 92 yards. The Eagles are in the playoffs, and will win the division for the sixth time this decade if they beat Dallas next week.

Ziggy Hood, a defensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers (8-7), got two tackles today including a big sack against Baltimore (8-7). He also recovered a fumble. Pittsburgh, which barely beat Green Bay last week, needed such plays in a critical 23-20 win Sunday. The defending Super Bowl champions still have a chance to make the playoffs.

It’s been slow around here lately, but check back for pictures and info from Houston throughout the week, especially getting to game time. Missouri (8-4) takes the field New Year’s Eve to play Navy (9-4). By Tuesday, all three of us (Robert, Sam and me) will be in town to see what’s up.

Breakout game for Maclin?

Former Tiger and current Philadelphia Eagle Jeremy Maclin had a big game today against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Maclin, at wide receiver, caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from Donovan McNabb to give the Eagles an early 7-0 lead. Later, McNabb threw Maclin a 40-yard touchdown pass within two minutes of halftime.

Maclin led all Philadelphia receivers with six catches and 142 yards. Philadelphia won 33-14.

The Eagles have several other talented young players to use on offense, including running back LeSean McCoy of Pitt, wide receiver DeSean Jackson of Cal and wide receiver Jason Avant of Michigan.

Martin Rucker goes to Philly

September 24, 2009

By Craig Thomas

Former MU tight end Martin Rucker, who was waived by the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday, has joined the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad.

Rucker caught two passes last year for the Browns as a rookie. The Eagles cut a tight end from their practice squad earlier in the week, making room for Rucker. Former Tiger wide receiver Jeremy Maclin is in his rookie season with the Eagles as well.

Tight ends on the Eagles’ roster include starter Brent Celek, rookie Cornelius Ingram, and Alex Smith.
