Brad Smith helps send Colts to first loss; good day for former Tigers

The New York Jets are still alive in the NFL playoff hunt. In part, they can thank the previously unbeaten Colts (14-1), who took starters like Peyton Manning out of the game for good. In part, they can thank a former Missouri Tiger.

Brad Smith holds the record for the longest play in Jets history after his 106-yard kickoff return Sunday in Indianapolis. The Jets (8-7) knocked off the Colts 29-15. Smith’s third-quarter dash gave New York a 10-9 lead.

He also carried twice for 16 yards.

Jeremy Maclin stepped up today, too. The rookie Philadelphia Eagle and former MUwide receiver managed to keep his toes inbounds as he hauled in a Donovan McNabb pass inside the 10-yard line in the final minute against Denver. That allowed David Akers to drill a game-winning field goal with just seconds left. The Eagles (11-4) beat the Broncos 30-27.

In all, Maclin had six catches for 92 yards. The Eagles are in the playoffs, and will win the division for the sixth time this decade if they beat Dallas next week.

Ziggy Hood, a defensive lineman for the Pittsburgh Steelers (8-7), got two tackles today including a big sack against Baltimore (8-7). He also recovered a fumble. Pittsburgh, which barely beat Green Bay last week, needed such plays in a critical 23-20 win Sunday. The defending Super Bowl champions still have a chance to make the playoffs.

It’s been slow around here lately, but check back for pictures and info from Houston throughout the week, especially getting to game time. Missouri (8-4) takes the field New Year’s Eve to play Navy (9-4). By Tuesday, all three of us (Robert, Sam and me) will be in town to see what’s up.

Some Nevada love for a former Tiger

Ziggy Hood

Sam and I explored the UNR campus a little this afternoon, and ran into a Nevada student wearing a Pittsburgh Steelers #96 jersey with HOOD printed above. That’s the jersey worn by Ziggy Hood, a former defensive lineman for MU, who’s now in the NFL.

The student said he had to get to class, holding in his hand a paper to turn in, but stopped to chat for a bit. He said he’s a Pittsburgh fan and got the jersey because Hood was the first pick the defending champion Steelers made in this year’s draft.

Interesting, though, that he chose the day of the Missouri – Nevada game to wear the jersey.
